순천만습지는 방학동안 학생들의 생태체험 프로그램도 운영하고 있어

순천시 시조는 흑두루미
순천만 주변에는 새와 인연이 깊은 마을 이름과 특별한 지명들이 많아요. (순천, 도사동,...)
학산리, 선학리, 송학리, 학동, 황새골, ...송학(황새), 학은 두루미,
순천만이 흑두루미를 비롯하여, 많은 철새들의 중요 서식지가 된것은 우연이 아닐 것 같습니다.
흑두루미(순천시 시조)는 매년 10월에 찾아와 6개월간 월동하고 이듬해 3월말경 떠나는 겨울 철새입니다.
세계적으로 희귀한 멸종위기 조류들로 순천만의 천연성에 기대어 살고 있습니다.
겨울이면 흑두루미, 검은목두루미, 재두루미, 노랑부리저어새, 검은머리갈매기,
민물도요, 큰고니, 혹부리오리등 수천마리의 물새들이 월동한다고 합니다.
봄. 가을에는 민물도요, 중부리도요, 청다리도요, 뒷부리도요, 알락꼬리마도요, 마도요, 개꿩, 흰물떼새, 왕눈물떼새 등과 같은
도요물떼새들이 시베리아-호주간의 이동경로상 중간 기착지로 이용한다고 합니다.
(비행기로 이동해도 먼거리를 날아서 오는 철새들에게 감동이네요, 먼거리 날아 온 철새들이 휴식하고 가는곳 이군요.)
